What should i try to do to get a blue & gold macaw and my new dog to get along?
I just introduced a new dog and my bird is a little stressed. (biting) My dog would probably just try to eat him. I don't need them to become friends, I just want them to get along. I know that waiting a few months would have them just ignore each other later on but what can i do to make that happen sooner?
When we introduced our bird to our new dog, we used two techniques to teach the dog that our bird was a member of the family and not a tasty meal. Using two people, we would leash the dog, and then ask him to roll over onto his side, then the other person would bring the bird out and pay attention to her while our dog had to remain lying on the floor. The person with the dog would reward the dog whenever his attention was on the peron, rather than the bird.
We also taught our dog that he was not allowed to make eye contact or stare at the bird. You can do this by teaching him the eye contact game first. Sit the dog in front of you, then holding a treat in your hand, bring your hand up and out to your side. At first the dog will simply stare at the treat, but the second he looks away from the treat, reward him by saying "yes" and giving him the treat. Once he knows this game, you can practice with the bird near by. That way you are teaching the dog that ignoring the bird gets rewards, and starting intently gets nothing. In time this should encourage him to ignore the bird and make your bird feel more secure.
